Demo of under-painting with water-based oil paint for pastel painting

This is a painting I did yesterday that I did on art spectrum pastel paper 9" x 12".  For the under-painting I used water based oil paints instead of my usual watercolor under-painting.  I was happy with this technique because the colors have a brighter result.  Basically you just dilute the oil paints with water to make them soupy and runny. And then... have fun blocking in large areas of color.

I find under-painting really helps the overall process of the painting in being able to get values and shapes blocked in quickly.  Plus, it keeps things loose which is what so many artists strive to accomplish. Me included!
